Based on data reported to the U.S. Justice Department for the calendar year 2000, this report presents California data on crimes, arrests, and adult felony arrest dispositions and also compares rates for the period 1999 and 2000, as well as for 1980 and 2000.
Abstract
From 1999 to 2000, reported California Crime Index (CCI) offenses increased 1.0 percent in rate per 100,000 population; the CCI offenses have decreased 54.6 percent in rate since 1980. From 1999 to 2000, there was no change in the violent-crime rate; the violent-crime rate has decreased 31.2 percent since 1980. From 1999 to 2000, the property-crime rate increased 1.5 percent; the property-crime rate has decreased 61.5 percent since 1980. Total arrests decreased 6.6 percent in rate per 100,000 population at risk from 1999 to 2000; total arrests have decreased 33.7 percent in rate since 1980. Felony arrests decreased 3.6 percent in rate per 100,000 population at risk from 1999 to 2000; felony arrests have decreased 11.3 percent in rate since 1980. From 1999 to 2000, misdemeanor arrests decreased 7.9 percent in rate. Misdemeanor arrests have decreased 41.7 percent in rate since 1980. As a percentage of reported adult felony arrest dispositions, law enforcement releases decreased from 4.4 percent in 1998 to 3.5 percent in 1999, and total complaints denied increased from 13.6 percent in 1998 to 14.4 percent in 1999. As a percentage of reported adult felony arrest dispositions, dismissals and acquittals increased from 12.6 percent in 1998 to 12.9 percent in 1999, and convictions decreased from 69.3 percent in 1998 to 69.2 percent in 1999. 1 figure and 3 tables
