THIS ANTHOLOGY PRESENTS ARTICLES ON THREE ASPECTS OF CRIMINOLOGY IN CANADA: NATIONAL CRIME STATISTICS, THEORIES OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY, AND CRIMES IN THE FORM OF MARKET TRANSACTIONS.
Abstract
THE FIRST GENERAL TOPIC IS DEVOTED TO THE SOURCES OF INFORMATION IN CRIMINOLOGY, WITH ARTICLES NOT ONLY CITING CANADIAN CRIME STATISTICS BUT ALSO EVALUATING DATA COLLECTION AND INTERPRETATION METHODS. THE POSSIBILITY OF DEVELOPING A QUALITATIVE CRIME INDEX MEASURING THE SERIOUSNESS OF CRIMINAL OFFENSES IS EXAMINED. ONE STUDY USES CRIME AND PUNISHMENT STATISTICS TO QUESTION THE ASSUMPTION THAT INCREASING CRIME RATES AND LENIENT SENTENCES ARE AN OBVIOUS TREND. THE SECOND MAJOR SUBJECT, JUVENILE DELINQUENCY, IS REPRESENTED BY ARTICLES THAT PROBE AND EXPLAIN THE SOCIAL CONDITIONS SURROUNDING CRIME AND DELINQUENCY. CAUSAL THEORIES CONCERN POLICE ATTITUDES AND THE LABELING PROCESS, THE MIDDLE-CLASS YOUTH CULTURE, THE CONCEPT OF ROLE COMMITMENT, AND THE DEVELOPMENTAL GROWTH OF A DELINQUENT OR CRIMINAL SELF-CONCEPT. PAPERS ON CRIME AS A FORM OF MARKET TRANSACTION FOCUS ON VARIOUS TYPES OF CRIMINALS, SUCH AS LOWER-CLASS ADOLESCENT MALES IN A SHORT-TERM OCCUPATION, DRUG TRAFFICKERS, BANK ROBBERS, PROSTITUTES, AND ROUNDERS. DRUG USE AMONG CANADIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IS ANALYZED. A STUDY OF CORPORATE CRIME, WHICH INVESTIGATES THE CORPORATE CRIMINAL RECORD AND THE GOVERNMENT'S ENFORCEMENT OF COMBINES LAWS, FINDS THAT THE LARGEST CORPORATIONS DISPLAY A CRIMINAL-FREE RECORD ALTHOUGH THEY ENGAGE IN MUCH CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. TABULAR DATA ARE INCLUDED; REFERENCES FOLLOW EACH ARTICLE. (MRK)
