Data concerning crimes and arrests in New York State in 1989 is presented. Violent offenses (murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) showed an increase of 3.5 percent from 1988 to 1989. Murder and non-negligent manslaughter increased 12.6 percent from 2,239 in 1988 to 2,253 in 1989.
Abstract
Forcible rape offenses went from 5,475 in 1988 to 5,227 in 1989, a decrease of 4.6 percent. Robbery offenses increased 6.7 percent from 97,445 offenses in 1988 to 104,001 in 1989. Aggravated assault offenses increased 0.6 percent. Nonviolent offenses (burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft) decreased 0.6 percent. Burglary offenses decreased 3.1 percent; larceny offenses decreased 2.9 percent; and motor vehicle theft increased 11.2 percent. A total of 1,569,792 Part II Offenses (ranging in seriousness from kidnapping to disorderly conduct) were reported, a 2.2 percent decrease over 1988. The value of property stolen during the commission of index offenses was $1,563,786,694 in 1989, a 5.7 percent increase from the 1988 total of $1,478,940,296. Stolen vehicles accounted for 51.6 percent of the value of property stolen in 1989.
