Abstract
A chapter on crime presents data and information on crime measurement, crime victim surveys, crime known to police, major offense types for 1989-90, crime location, and cleared offenses. A chapter on selected offense profiles focuses on drug offenses, homicide, aggravated assault, sexual assault, household burglary, robbery, and motor vehicle theft. A chapter on criminal courts first depicts the structure of the criminal justice system in New South Wales followed by an overview of trends in criminal court appearances. Statistics and information presented address offenders' ages, court workload, court delay, bail, pleas, conviction rates, appeals, sentencing, imprisonment, and life sentences. Data on prisons pertain to the legal status of inmates, the percentage of the inmate population imprisoned for various offenses, inmate gender, inmate age, the imprisonment rate of Aborigines, inmate prior imprisonment, and trends in the prison population.
