A GUIDE FOR TEACHERS OF A 9-WEEK COURSE FOR YOUNG STUDENTS OUTLINES SUGGESTED COURSE STRUCTURE AND PROCEDURES FOR STUDYING VARIOUS ASPECTS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE.
Abstract
THE PURPOSE OF THE COURSE DESCRIBED IS TO HELP STUDENTS BECOME MORE AWARE OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. IN ORDER TO ATTAIN THIS AWARENESS, STUDENTS INVESTIGATE THE NATURE AND CAUSES OF CRIME, THE MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT AND THE REALITIES OF LAW ENFORCEMENT PRACTICES, THE INHERENT CONFLICTS IN OUR CRIMINAL PROCESS BETWEEN THE RIGHTS OF THE INDIVIDUAL AND THE INTERESTS OF SOCIETY, AND THE THEORIES UNDERLYING THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM. PROBLEMSOLVING AND CONFLICT-RESOLUTION SKILLS ARE USED TO DEVELOP THE SKILLS OF INQUIRY AND CRITICAL THOUGHT. THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO FOUR SECTIONS, OR EXPERIENCES, CONCERNING CRIME, THE POLICE, THE COURTS, AND CORRECTIONS. THE FORMAT OF EACH OF THE UNITS WHICH MAKE UP THE SECTION CONSISTS OF: TITLE, PURPOSE, PROCEDURE, MATERIALS, AND SUGGESTED VARIATIONS. A BIBLIOGRAPHY AND RESOURCE SHEETS ARE PROVIDED FOR EACH SECTION. RESOURCE SHEETS CONSIST OF SUCH ITEMS AS PRESENTATIONS OF CRIME STATISTICS, REPRODUCTIONS OF NEWSPAPER ARTICLES, TESTS, SAMPLE CRIMES FOR STUDENTS TO SOLVE, AND CONTROVERSIAL CASES FOR THEM TO DISCUSS.
