Abstract
Police statistics address offenses reported or known to police and alleged offenders apprehended. Court statistics encompass the cases before the Supreme and District Criminal Courts and Courts of Summary Jurisdiction as well as appearances before Children's Aid Panels. Correctional services data are also provided. The number of crimes reported or known to police in 1993 increased by 4.7 percent over the previous 12 months. Police recorded 213,830 offenses. Property offenses increased 2.3 percent, and violent offenses increased between 14 and 18 percent. Part of the increase in violent offenses was due to increased reporting by the public and improved police recordkeeping. The majority of offenders arrested in 1993 were male (82.9 percent). During 1993, there were 36,271 criminal matters finalized in the magistrates courts, a 2.1-percent increase over 1992. A total of 63.4 percent of all defendants in the magistrates court were convicted of their major charge. There was an overall decrease of 24 percent in the number of cases finalized before the Supreme and District Criminal Courts. The daily average prison population remained constant between 1992 (1,143 inmates) and 1993 (1,149 inmates). The number of appearances before a Children's Court or Aid Panel declined by 6.4 percent from the previous year. Extensive tabular data
