This Kentucky public hearing on the criminal justice system is intended to educate the public about the American judicial and penal system.
Abstract
Participants include Kentucky's Attorney General, the State Secretary for Public Protection and Regulation, the Supreme Court's Chief Justice, the Secretary of Corrections, a university professor of sociology, and a dean of a college of law. Eight separate contributions cover the topics of economic crime, a rational and just judicial system, criminal responsibility, the court of public opinion, the high cost of the nation's penal system, white-collar crime, a new model of crime control, and civil liberties and crime control. A question-and-answer section addresses Kentucky's proposed law to allow a person to be judged guilty but mentally ill, mandatory sentencing and parole, Kentucky's prison rehabilitation program, and the exclusionary rule.
