STATISTICS COMPILED BY THE ARIZONA UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING UNIT ON INDEX CRIMES, ARRESTS, AND ASSAULTS ON POLICE ARE REPORTED.
Abstract
THE REPORT OPENS WITH A BRIEF REVIEW OF THE HISTORY AND OBJECTIVES OF THE ARIZONA UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING SYSTEM, AN OUTLINE OF THE UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING CLASSIFICATION OF OFFENSES (VIOLENT AND NONVIOLENT INDEX CRIMES, NONINDEX CRIMES), AND AN OVERVIEW OF THE STATE OF ARIZONA'S GEOGRAPHY, CLIMATE AND POPULATION DISTRIBUTION. A STATEWIDE CRIME SUMMARY INCLUDES CLOCKS SHOWING HOW OFTEN A GIVEN CRIME OCCURRED (E.G., 1 BURGLARY EVERY 9.8 MINUTES). CHARTS, TABLES, AND GRAPHS PRESENT STATISTICS ON SPECIFIC INDEX CRIMES, INDEX CRIMES BY MONTH, AND TYPE AND VALUE OF PROPERTY STOLEN AND RECOVERED (STATE TOTALS, BY COUNTY, AND BY PLANNING REGION). ARREST DATE INCLUDE STATE TOTALS BY OFFENSE, AND TOTALS FOR ADULT AND JUVENILE MALES AND FEMALES. STATISTICS ON ASSAULTS ON POLICE ARE ALSO INCLUDED. THERE WERE 176,346 INDEX OFFENSES REPORTED, OF WHICH 19.1 PERCENT WERE CLEARED. ARIZONA'S CRIME RATE WAS 76.8 INDEX OFFENSES PER 1,000 POPULATION. THE VALUE OF PROPERTY STOLEN AMOUNTED TO $65,414,345, OF WHICH $20,003,201 (30.6 PERCENT) WAS RECOVERED. MURDERS INCREASED 24.3 PERCENT OVER 1976. FIREARMS WERE USED IN 59.1 PERCENT OF ALL MURDER AND NONNEGLIGENT MANSLAUGHTER CASES. LARCENY-THEFT ACCOUNTED FOR THE LARGEST NUMBER (57.6 PERCENT) OF INDEX OFFENSES, AND RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES ACCOUNTED FOR 72.2 PERCENT OF ALL BURGLARIES. ARREST DATA SHOW THAT 117,219 PERSONS WERE ARRESTED DURING 1977, WITH ADULTS ACCOUNTING FOR 78.6 OF VIOLENT CRIME ARRESTS AND JUVENILES ACCOUNTING FOR 58.9 PERCENT OF PROPERTY CRIME ARRESTS AND 31.2 PERCENT OF ALL ARRESTS. OF 1,164 ASSAULTS ON OFFICERS, 96.6 PERCENT WERE CLEARED. MAPS, A GLOSSARY, COPIES OF REPORTING FORMS, THE ARIZONA REPORTING STATUTE, AND A CRIME-REPORTING FLOWCHART ARE APPENDED. (LKM)
