This pamphlet provides basic information on crime statistics in California, relying heavily on charts and graphs to present the information.
Abstract
The pamphlet defines crime in terms of type of offense and categories of crime, and quantifies crime in California both according to Uniform Crime Report data and California Crime Index data. Trends in crime in California since 1952 are described, with an emphasis on the short- and long-term directions of crime in the State, as well as changing victimization patterns. Official records and correctional officials provided information used here to construct profiles of typical offenders. The pamphlet also examines the State's criminal justice system, the cost of crime, and the policy implications of the data presented in this report.
