After presenting an overview of California's criminal justice system, State crime statistics for 2011 are reported.
Abstract
The statistics cover reported crimes, arrests, dispositions of adult felony arrests, adult probation, criminal justice personnel, citizens' complaints against peace officers, domestic violence-related calls for assistance, and law enforcement officers killed or assaulted. Statistics for preceding years enable comparisons. From 2010 to 2011, the violent crime rate per 100,000 population decreased 2.1 percent, from 422.3 to 413.3), reaching its lowest level since 1968 (411.1). The number of homicide crimes continued to decline in 2011; since peaking in 1993, the number of homicides has decreased 56.2 percent, from 4,095 to 1,794.The aggravated assault rate has declined steadily since peaking in 1992. The property crime rate increased 2.6 percent from 2010 to 2011, and the burglary rate of 612.9 per 100,000 population is one-half the 1966 rate of 1,225.9. Since peaking in 1989, the motor vehicle theft rate has decreased 62.3 percent. The arson rate per 100,000 population declined 43.7 percent from 2006 to 2011. Regarding dispositions, in 2011, 67.0 percent of adult felony arrests resulted in conviction. Probation with jail continues to be the most frequent sentence for adult felony arrest convictions. From 2010 to 2011, there was a 5.2 percent increase in the rate of adults placed on probation, and from 2010 to 2011, there was a 2-percent decrease in the rate of adults removed from probation.
