USING TABLES OF DATA SECURED FROM THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION'S UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS FOR 1977, A STATISTICAL REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF CAMPUS CRIME AT 220 AMERICAN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.
Abstract
RELEASED IN OCTOBER, 1978, THE CRIME REPORTS CONTAINED TWO TABLES OF STATISTICS RECEIVED FROM COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. BOTH VIOLENT CRIME (MURDER, RAPE, ROBBERY, AND ASSAULT) AND PROPERTY CRIME (BURGLARY, LARCENY-THEFT, AND AUTO THEFT) DATA ARE PROVIDED, ALONG WITH ENROLLMENT FIGURES. THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS (19,224 STUDENTS) LED THE FIELD IN VIOLENT CRIMES, EDGING OUT MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY, 64 TO 57. IN PROPERTY CRIME, OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY, WITH 45,665 STUDENTS, A WHOPPING 1,661 BURGLARIES AND THEFTS, FINISHED JUST AHEAD OF MICHIGAN STATE WITH 1,541 AND INDIANA UNIVERSITY AT BLOOMINGTON WITH 1,405. CALIFORNIA INSTITUTIONS ACCOUNTED FOR 50 PERCENT OF ALL CAMPUS MURDERS--CALIFORNIA STATE 2 AND THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT DAVIS 1. THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN EMPLOYED THE MOST POLICE PERSONNEL WITH A TOTAL OF 106 MALE AND 31 FEMALE CAMPUS SECURITY OFFICERS. (KBL)
