INTENDED FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS AND TEACHERS, THIS NEWSLETTER PROVIDES ARTICLES, CLASSROOM EXERCISES, AND QUESTIONNAIRES ON THE USE OF CORRECTIONS, CORRECTIONAL CONDITIONS, CORRECTIONS PROCEDURES, AND PRISON REFORM.
Abstract
SPECIAL FEATURES OF THIS ISSUE INCLUDE A DISCUSSION OF THE HISTORY AND OBJECTIVES OF CORRECTIONS, AN EXERCISE ON SENTENCING, A DESCRIPTION OF THE CORRECTIONS EXPERIMENT IN WHICH STUDENTS ROLE-PLAYED PRISON INMATES AND GUARDS, AND A DISCUSSION OF PRISONERS RIGHTS. THE NEWSLETTER ALSO PRESENTS DESCRIPTIONS OF LIFE IN MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISONS, CITY AND COUNTY JAILS, AND A WOMEN'S CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTE. FINALLY, SUCH ISSUES AS OFFENDER REINTEGRATION WITH SOCIETY, ALTERNATIVES TO PRISON, AND VOLUNTEERISM ARE EXAMINED. QUESTIONS FOR CLASS DISCUSSION ARE INCLUDED IN THE ARTICLES.
