Abstract
The statistics revealed that 138,406 index offenses were reported in 1996, a 5.9-percent decrease from 1995. The total index offenses for 1996 were the lowest reported since the Connecticut Uniform Crime Reporting program began in 1977. The index offenses included 13,478 violent crimes, an increase of 2 percent from 1995. The 124,928 property crimes represented a 6.7 decrease from 1995. The index crime rate was 4,227.4 offenses per 100,000, down from 4,491.8 in 1995. Data on monthly crime variations revealed that crimes peaked in the summer months of July and August. The police cleared 20.1 percent of all reported index crimes, including 46.7 percent of violent offenses and 17.3 percent of property offenses. Figures and tables
