DISCUSSION OF BASIS FOR, CHARACTERISTICS AND APPLICATION OF THE DETERRENCE PERSPECTIVE, NOTING ITS LIMITATIONS AND TENDENCY TO RESTRICT CRIME CONTROL ALTERNATIVES.
Abstract
THE DETERRENCE PERSPECTIVE IS DEFINED AND PRESENTED AS A POINT OF VIEW UNDERLYING MANY CRIME CONTROL POLICIES. DETERRENCE, WITH ITS OBJECT OF LIMITING CRIME, IS DISTINGUISHED FROM BOTH JUSTICE AND RETRIBUTION, ALTHOUGH THE AUTHOR ACKNOWLEDGES ITS PHILOSOPHICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL BASIS, HE POINTS OUT THE LACK OF SUFFICIENT RESEARCH EVIDENCE PROVING ITS EFFECTIVENESS. HE VIEWS THE DANGER OF THE DETERRENCE PERSPECTIVE AS DERIVING FROM ITS RIGIDITY, AND THE TENDENCY OF ITS ADHERENTS TO RESTRICT THE DEVELOPMENT OF ALTERNATIVE, AND POSSIBLY MORE EFFECTIVE, METHODS OF CRIME CONTROL.
