This report first reviews some of the major issues, trends, and problems in criminal justice in Nassau County, N.Y., and then presents the results of a preliminary analysis of annual data covering selected programs in the Criminal Division of the Nassau County Probation Department.
Abstract
Using a comparative analysis methodology, findings and conclusions for 1987 are compared with those for 1986, and, for some areas, with the past 7 years. Some of the more controversial issues, trends, or problems focused on in the past year were crime trends, the criminal justice response, sentencing reform, substance abuse and crime, probation and the intensive supervision movement, employment and crime, and prediction and recidivism. The report identifies significant changes in Criminal Division programs and services, identifies trends which could impact on future programs, measures organizational efficiency and effectiveness, anticipates problem areas, examines the relationships of the findings to organizational goals and objectives, and considers the relationship of the findings to social problems or forces external to the probation department. 47 tables.
