This report of personal and property crime in Finland for 1980 notes that property offenses increased 12 percent from 1974 to 1980, whereas offenses against life or health and sexual offenses remained almost unchanged during this period.
Abstract
The study is based on a sample taken from the following crimes reported to the police in 1980: 160,182 property offenses; 18,162 offenses against life or health; and 1,102 sexual offenses. The 12-percent increase in property offenses was borne entirely by corporate bodies, with shoplifting accounting for the greatest increase. Property offenses resulted in a gross loss of about $34 million. Because 1980 losses were directed at less valuable objects than 1974 offenses, the current value of property lost actually declined by 10 percent. The most common object involved in a property offense was a bicycle. Both the youngest group (15 to 19 years) and the oldest (over 50) had higher victimization rates than other age groups. The average age of victims was 39, and the proportion of offenses and the number of violent offenses in which the victim suffered an injury remained the same. The most typical violent offense was an assault with fists and without a weapon. Tables, figures, footnotes, materials on the study's methodology, and 13 references are supplied.
