CROSS-CULTURAL COMPARISON THAT DESCRIBES THE NATURE AND THE CAUSES OF CRIME IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO UGANDA.
Abstract
ONE MEASURE OF THE EFFECTIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A COUNTRY PROBABLY IS ITS RISING CRIME RATE. THE NATURE AND TYPES OF CRIME IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES ARE ALSO DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS. YET, PRACTICALLY NO REFERENCE IS MADE TO ANY DEVELOPING COUNTRY IN THE STANDARD CRIMINOLOGICAL REFERENCE BOOKS, NOR IS THERE ANY MENTION OF CRIME IN WORKS ON DEVELOPMENT OR URBANIZATION IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. THIS BOOK ATTEMPTS TO FILL THE VOID IN THESE TWO AREAS OF COMPARATIVE CRIMINOLOGY AND COMPARATIVE SOCIOLOGY BY PROVIDING A COMPARISON OF THE INCIDENCE, THE TYPES, AND THE FORCES WHICH PRODUCE CRIME IN DEVELOPED AND DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. ORGANIZED AROUND A NUMBER OF IMPORTANT FRAMES OF REFERENCE DERIVED FROM CRIMINOLOGICAL RESEARCH IN THE UNITED STATES AND EUROPE, CRIME IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES, A COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE BRINGS TOGETHER MOST OF THE EXISTING RESEARCH FINDINGS ON CRIME IN AFRICA, ASIA, AND LATIN AMERICA. IN ADDITION, NUMEROUS REFERENCES ARE MADE TO THE AUTHORS' RESEARCH ON CRIME IN KAMPALA, UGANDA, AN EXTENSIVE EFFORT TO TEST CRIMINOLOGICAL THEORIES FROM THE UNITED STATES AND EUROPE IN A DEVELOPING COUNTRY. THE BOOK'S CROSS-CULTURAL COMPARISON SHOWS HOW CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR IS INFLUENCED BY URBANIZATION, MIGRATION, THE SOCIAL ORGANIZATION OF SLUM AREAS, DIFFERENTIAL OPPORTUNITY AND POVERTY, AND DIFFERENTIAL ASSOCIATION AND PEER GROUP STRUCTURES.
