RESULTS OF A PARTIAL CORRELATION STUDY TO DETERMINE WHETHER CRIME IS A MANIFESTATION OF AN EXTERNAL DISECONOMY OF URBANIZATION.
Abstract
CORRELATIONS WERE OBTAINED BETWEEN CRIME RATES AND POPULATION DENSITY AND NET IN-MIGRATION RATES FOR 95 STANDARD METROPOLITAN STATISTICAL AREAS (SMSA). SEVERAL FACTORS WERE SELECTED FOR ANALYSIS, INCLUDING MEDIAN INCOME LEVELS, EDUCATIONAL LEVELS, RACIAL MIX, PERCENTAGE OF POPULATION RESIDING IN POVERTY AREAS, MEAN ANNUAL TEMPERATURES, AND POLICE TO POPULATION RATIO. NO RELATIONSHIP WAS DISCERNED BETWEEN POPULATION DENSITY AND CRIME RATES. MORE RESEARCH INTO THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN IN-MIGRATION AND CRIME IS RECOMMENDED.
