Abstract
This book is intended for use by professionals in the fields of criminology, gerontology, psychology, medicine, sociology, and social work who deal directly with the problem of elder abuse. This third edition of this book builds on previous editions and includes research updates, new sources for information, and applied critical thinking questions at the end of each chapter to make the chapters more interactive with the reader. The book contains nine chapters and each chapter begins with brief scenario describing an elderly person's victimization experiences and consequences. Chapter 1 examines how crime and elder abuse are intertwined, while chapter 2 examines crimes against the elderly and why they have been ignored for so long. Chapter 3 discusses the different types of abuse and crime experienced by the elderly, while chapter 4 explores victimization effects, intervention measures, and legislative consequences of elder abuse. Chapter 5 presents a systems approach to detecting, investigating, and responding to crimes against the elderly; chapter 6 examines criminological theories dealing with elder abuse; and chapter 7 discusses an integrated approach to preventing elder abuse. Chapter 8 presents different ways for stopping elder abuse using a collaborative approach, while chapter 9 contains recommendations for future policy and research dealing with elder abuse.
