Abstract
This document, volume 2 from Crime in England and Wales 2008/09 is intended for use as a reference guide with explanatory notes regarding the issues and classifications which are necessary for production of the crime statistics that result from the British Crime Survey and the information on crimes recorded by the police. The British Crime Survey (BCS) is a large, nationally representative crime victimization survey of over 46,000 adults in England and Wales. Respondents are surveyed on their experiences of crime-related incidents in the past 12 months, and on their attitudes towards different crime-related issues. These issues include attitudes towards the police, the criminal justice system, experiences of fraud, and perceptions of crime and anti-social behavior. This Home Office Statistical Bulletin is divided into nine sections that provide explanatory notes regarding the differences between the BCS and police recorded crime: Section 1 - Introduction; Section 2 - British Crime Survey (BCS); Section 3 - Police Recorded Crime; Section 4 - Comparison Between the BCS and Police Recorded Crime; Section 5 - Crime Types and Drug Measures; Section 6 - Perceptions; Section 7 - Classifications; Section 8 - Statistical Conventions and Methods; and Section 9 - UK CrimeSstatistics.
