A STATISTICAL SUMMARY OF CRIME IN HAWAII DURING 1977 IS PRESENTED BASED ON UNIFORM CRIME REPORT DATA COLLECTED BY THE HAWAII CRIMINAL JUSTICE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS CENTER.
Abstract
THE 7 MOST SERIOUS CRIMES (INDEX CRIMES) TOTALED 58,549 IN 1977, A SLIGHT INCREASE OVER 1976. LARCENY AND THEFT REMAINED THE LARGEST CATEGORY OF INDEX CRIMES. LARCENIES NUMBERED 35,062, AN INCREASE OF 7.8 PERCENT. CRIMES AGAINST PERSONS TOTALED 2,009, A 1.1-PERCENT DECREASE. PROPERTY CRIMES INCREASED 4.7 PERCENT FOR A TOTAL OF 56,540: LARCENY-THEFT ACCOUNTED FOR 62.0 PERCENT OF THESE, AND BURGLARY AND VEHICLE THEFT ACCOUNTED FOR 30.2 AND 7.7 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL RESPECTIVELY. THE MAJORITY OF BURGLARIES WERE RESIDENTIAL AND OCCURRED DURING THE DAY. VALUE OF PROPERTY REPORTED STOLEN WAS $24,778,935, AND OF THIS, POLICE RECOVERED $6,512,119 (26.3 PERCENT). ARRESTS FOR INDEX CRIMES ACCOUNTED FOR 31.5 PERCENT OF THE 31,953 TOTAL ARRESTS, AND JUVENILE ARRESTS ACCOUNTED FOR 31.5 PERCENT OF ALL ARRESTS. DRUG VIOLATION ARRESTS WERE SLIGHTLY HIGHER FOR 1977, A TOTAL OF 3,122. GAMBLING ARRESTS TOTALED 1,294. REPORTED INCIDENCE OF CRIMES PER MONTH IS GRAPHICALLY PRESENTED. ALSO INCLUDED ARE 25 TABLES PRESENTING BREAKDOWNS BY AGE, SEX, AND RACE OF THOSE ARRESTED, OFFENSES BY MONTH, COUNTY, AND TYPE, AND STOLEN PROPERTY DATA. (JAP)
