THIS ARTICLE TAKES A LOOK AT SOME OF THE STATISTICS AND THE REASONS FOR THE DECLINE IN CERTAIN TYPES OF CRIME IN JAPAN.
Abstract
THERE HAS BEEN A DOWNWARD TREND IN THE JAPANESE CRIME RATE FOR THE PAST 26 YEARS. THERE WERE ABOUT 1.6 MILLION OFFENSES REPORTED TO THE POLICE IN 1948 AND 1.2 MILLION IN 1974. THE RATE OF SUCH OFFENSES PER 100,000 PERSONS DROPPED FROM 2,995 TO 1,425 OVER THIS PERIOD. THE AUTHOR BELIEVES THAT THE INFLUENCE OF JAPANESE MORALITY IS A DETERMINING FACTOR IN THE PROCESS. BUT OTHERS ARE BELIEVED TO BE SEVERE CONTROLS OVER FIREARMS AND NARCOTICS, HIGH RATE OF POLICE SOLUTION OF CRIME, AND NO SERIOUS RACIAL ISSUES....BDS
