A SYNOPSIS IS PROVIDED OF VARIOUS REPORTS DELIVERED AT A SYMPOSIUM ON CRIME LABORATORY ISSUES.
Abstract
THE COMMITTEE REPORTS ARE PRESENTED FOLLOWING INTRODUCTIONS TO OFFICERS OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CRIME LABORATORY DIRECTORS, (ASCLD). THE FIRST REPORT PERTAINS TO MEMBERSHIP IN THE ASCLD, THE SYMPOSIUM SPONSORS. THERE ARE 213 MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY; IN 1975 THE SOCIETY GAINED 41 NEW MEMBERS AND LOST 23. ALMOST ALL STATE AND LOCAL CRIME LABORATORIES ARE NOW REPRESENTED IN THE SOCIETY. THE NEXT REPORT DEALS WITH CRIMINALISTICS CERTIFICATION AND CONTAINS THE FINDINGS OF A POLL OF REGIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS REGARDING THE CONCEPT OF NATIONAL VOLUNTARY CRIMINOLOGIST PEER GROUP CERTIFICATION. THE MAJORITY OF THE GROUP POLLED AGREED WITH THIS CERTIFICATION CONCEPT. THE BENEFITS OF A POSSIBLE NATIONAL PROGRAM OF CERTIFICATION IN CRIMINALISTICS ARE OUTLINED. A THIRD PRESENTATION DEALS WITH RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AND THE PROGRESS OF THE FORENSIC SCIENCE RESEARCH AND TRAINING FACILITY AT THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION'S ACADEMY. THE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECTED BUILDING PROGRAM ARE DETAILED. EDUCATION AND TRAINING ARE THE TOPIC OF THE NEXT PAPER. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVES OF ACADEMIC PROGRAMS IN FORENSIC SCIENCE ARE OUTLINED. ACCREDITATION AND QUALIFICATION OF FACULTY, PROGRAM OBJECTIVES, GRADUATE PROGRAMS, AND ACADEMIC CURRICULUMS ARE DISCUSSED. THE FOURTH COMMITTEE'S PRESENTATION CONCERNS LAW ENFORCEMENT LIAISON; EFFORTS AT MAINTAINING LIAISON WITH VARIOUS OTHER POLICE-ASSOCIATED ORGANIZATIONS ARE BRIEFLY REVIEWED. THE LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE REPORT PRESENTS A LIST OF LAWS, RULES, AND DECISIONS OF INTEREST TO CRIME LABORATORIES RELATING TO DRUGS AND MARIHUANA, FUNDING, AND EVIDENCE DESTRUCTION. IN ITS STATEMENT, LABORATORY ACCREDITATION PLANNING COMMITTEE NOTES THE COMPLETION OF A ROUGH DRAFT FOR ACCREDITATION PROCEDURES AND REQUIREMENTS. FINALLY, THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE RECORDS ITS DEVELOPMENT OF A WORKLOAD REPORT FORM THAT WOULD BE SUITABLE FOR REGISTERING AND COMPARING DATA FOR CRIME LABORATORY MANAGEMENT USE.
