Abstract
The statistics were gathered from all law enforcement agencies in the State and forwarded to the FBI for inclusion in the National Crime Report. Various sections focus on background information, index crimes, stolen and recovered property values, clearance rates, arrest data, police employment data, officers assaulted, crime factors, a profile of the State, and a county-by-county crime analysis. In summary, 46,967 index offenses were reported, an increase of 1,883 offenses over 1978. The crime rate was 42.5 per 1,000 inhabitants, compared to 41.68 in 1978. Violent crimes decreased by 3.2 percent, and property crimes increased by 4.6 percent since the previous report. Rapes decreased by 7.4 percent, robbery by 4.2 aggravated assault by 3.9 percent, burglary by 7.4 percent, and motor vehicle thefts by 6.2 percent. Larceny-thefts increased by 11.8 percent. Police recovered 46.4 percent of stolen property in 1979 and cleared 25.4 percent of all index crimes. Data are presented in charts, graphs, and tables, and explanatory texts are included.
