These statistics, compiled under the Uniform Crime Reporting Program from data submitted by Maryland law enforcement agencies, presents a statewide view of crime for 1996.
Abstract
Following an overview of the Maryland Uniform Crime Reporting Program, a discussion of crime factors is presented. The data show that 308,903 index offenses (criminal homicide, forcible rape, robbery, assault, breaking or entering, larceny- theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson) were reported to law enforcement agencies in Maryland during the calendar year 1996, a 3-percent decrease from 1995. Violent crime accounted for 15 percent of the total Crime Index for 1996, compared to 16 percent in 1995; violent crime decreased 5 percent compared to 1995. The number of property crimes reported during 1996 was more than 5 times greater than the number of violent crimes reported. Property crimes composed 85 percent of the total Crime Index in 1996, compared to 84 percent in 1995; the number decreased by 2 percent. The crime rate for Maryland in 1996 was 6,090.4 victims for every 100,000 population, a 3-percent decrease from 1995. Maryland law enforcement agencies cleared 22 percent of all index offenses reported to them in 1996, compared to 21 percent in 1995.
