This annual report provides data on crime trends in Maryland for the year 2012.
Highlights of findings from this annual report on crime trends in Maryland include the following: crime in Maryland decreased 3 percent in 2012, with 189,816 crime incidents reported in 2012 compared to 195,517 crime incidents reported in 2011; the largest decreases in crime rates were found in motor vehicle thefts (-9.8 percent), breaking or entering (-6.5 percent), and arson (-5.1 percent); conversely, both murder and rape saw an increase in 2012 at 6.5 percent and 3.3 percent, respectively; arrests decreased 1 percent in 2012 compared to 2011; juvenile arrests accounted for 12 percent of total arrests in 2012, a 15-percent decrease from 2011; and 4 Maryland law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty in 2012, and 3,444 were assaulted. This report was prepared by the Maryland Department of State Police with data submitted to the State's Uniform Crime Reporting Program by all law enforcement agencies within the State. The data in the report provide an indication of crime and criminal activities known to, and reported by, law enforcement agencies. The report details crime incidents, clearance rates, arrests, law enforcement officers killed and assaulted, and law enforcement employee data for all county, municipal, and statewide law enforcement agencies.
