Abstract
A section on crime reporting in Michigan encompasses authorizing legislation; the Uniform Crime Reporting system; and information on crime factors, crime rates, urban versus rural crime, terminology, decade statistics, and law enforcement officers killed or assaulted. Offense and arrest data for the State are for murder, rape, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson. Statistics on total crime are included as well. Offense and arrest data are also presented by county and jurisdiction. The statistics indicate that violent crime in Michigan rose 2.7 percent from 1990, and property crime rose 3.5 percent. Collectively, index crimes (murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson), used by law enforcement as a standard measure of criminal activity, were up 3.4 percent in 1991 compared to 1990 figures. Motor vehicle theft, however, was down 4.0 percent from 1990, continuing a decline over the past 7 years.
