In addition to index and non-index crimes, data are also provided on domestic violence and hate crimes. Decade crime statistics are provided as well, and the work of multijurisdictional task forces is addressed with pertinent data. In 1996 there were 452,929 reported index offenses (murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson). This is a decrease of 2.1 percent from the previous year. The number of persons arrested for index offenses was 65,068, a decrease of 4.9 percent from the previous year. There were 49,166 reported domestic violence offenses, compared to 48,678 the previous year. Data are also provided on the race, age, sex, and injuries of domestic violence victims.
