This document presents data on crime and arrest activity in Missouri from 1992 through 2001 with emphasis on the most recent year’s crime and arrest activity (2001).
Abstract
In 2001, 274,605 Crime Index offenses were reported. In 2001, one Index Crime was committed every 1.9 minutes. In 29.3 of every 100 Crime Index offenses, the cases were cleared by arrest or exceptional means. Violent offenses comprised 11.4 percent of the total 2001 Missouri Crime Index. There were 31,271 Violent Index offenses reported in 2001. A violent offense was committed every 17 minutes. In 49.8 of every 100 Violent Index offenses, the cases were cleared by arrest or exceptional means. There were 399 murders, 1,396 forcible rapes, 7,802 robberies, and 21,674 aggravated assaults reported in 2001. Property offenses made up 88.6 percent of the total 2001 Missouri Crime Index. There were 243,334 Property Index offenses reported. Property offenses accounted for $349,612,061 in property stolen or destroyed. Once such offense occurred every 2.2 minutes in the State. In 17.5 of every 100 Property Index offenses, the cases were cleared by arrest or exceptional means. There were 43,367 burglaries, 28,329 motor vehicle thefts, and 2,552 arson incidents reported in 2001. Law enforcement agencies reported 29,925 incidents of domestic violence in 2001. These included 9,227 incidents of spousal abuse; 7,705 incidents between individuals living together; 4,638 incidents between blood relatives; and 2,900 incidents between individuals that have lived together in the past. In 2001, four officers were killed feloniously and four were killed accidentally in the line of duty.
