Data are reported on crimes recorded by Nebraska law enforcement agencies in 2011, as well as total arrests; a special section of the report reviews hate crimes in the State.
Abstract
Nebraska law enforcement agencies recorded 53,285 crimes for calendar year 2011, compared to 51,992 reported during 2010, an increase of 1,293 crimes. The offenses included in this number are the eight index offenses of the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) offenses: murder-manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. There were 4,420 violent crimes (murder-manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault), compared to 4,817 reported in 2010, a decrease of 397 crimes. There were 48,865 property crimes in 2011, compared to 47,175 reported in 2010, an increase of 1,690 crimes (4-percent increase). The total number of persons arrested in the State during 2011 decreased from 84,087 in 2010 to 83,290 in 2011, a decrease of 797 arrests. Most of the arrests were for driving under the influence, followed by drug abuse violations, liquor law violations, larceny-theft, and simple assault. The total number of adult arrests (ages 18 and over) increased less than 1.0 percent, from 70,008 in 2010 to 70,147 in 2011. The number of juvenile arrests decreased 7 percent, from 14,079 in 2010 to 13,143 in 2011. There were 39 offenses determined by Nebraska law enforcement agencies to be motivated by hate, a 40-percent decrease from the 65 reported in 2010. A total of 26 hate crimes were motivated by racial bias, 5 by bias based on victims' ethnicity/national origin, 2 by religious bias, and 6 by the sexual orientation of the victim. 6 tables
