This report describes the New Jersey Uniform Crime Reporting program and presents New Jersey State and county statistics on crimes and arrests, as well as data on police employees, assaults on police, and police deaths in 2000.
Abstract
Results revealed that the State experienced 265,840 Index offenses in 2000, a 4 percent decrease compared to 1999. The State’s crime rate was 31.6 victims for every 1,000 permanent inhabitants, a decrease of 8 percent compared to 1999. The highest number of reported crimes occurred in July; the lowest number occurred in February. The total value of property stolen was $464.8 million; the total value of property recovered was $161.4 million. Stolen motor vehicles accounted for 59 percent of stolen property and 91 percent of the recovered property value. Arrests for Index offenses involved 54,488 persons, a 5 per cent decrease compared to 1999. Crime Index arrests accounted for 14 percent of the total arrests. Police cleared 20 percent of the Index offenses; juveniles accounted for 21 percent of these clearances. No police officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty; 3,158 police officers were assaulted in the line of duty. Police reported 77,680 domestic violence offenses and 656 individual bias incidents resulting in 710 specific bias index offenses. Figures and tables
