This report explains the North Carolina Uniform Crime Reporting Program and presents statistics on violent and property crimes, hate crimes, the value of property stolen and recovered, arrests and clearances, law enforcement officers killed or assaulted, and incident-based offenses by agency for 1998.
Abstract
Data came from the more than 450 law enforcement agencies in the State. The overall crime rate in North Carolina decreased 3 percent between 1997 and 1998. The rate of property crimes (burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft) decreased 3 percent; the rate of violent crimes (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) decreased 5 percent. The murder rate declined by 3 percent; the robbery rate declined by 7 percent. The number of juveniles under age 18 arrested for violent crime declined by 12 percent; adult arrests for violent crime were unchanged. The number of property crime arrests for both juveniles under age 18 and for adults decreased 1 percent. A property crime was committed every 1.5 minutes; a violent crime was committed every 12.2 minutes. One North Carolina law enforcement officer was killed in the line of duty in 1998; two officers died as the result of duty-related accidents. A total of 2,728 assaults on law enforcement officers took place, including 393 in which the officer sustained injuries. Tables and figures
