This document provides crime statistics for the State of North Dakota in the year 2000.
Abstract
For the State of North Dakota there was a decrease of 3 percent in crime index offenses reported by local law enforcement agencies, with 14,150 offenses in 2000 and 14,590 in 1999. Crime index offenses include murder/non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny/theft, and motor vehicle theft. The index crime rate per 100,000 population for 2000 was 2203.4. This is a 4 percent decrease from 1999. The total number of reported violent index crimes (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) was 562. This represents an increase of 26 percent from the total of 445 reported in 1999. Violent crime accounted for 4 percent of total index crimes reported in 2000. Property crimes, such as burglary, larceny/theft, and motor vehicle theft, decreased by over 3 percent from 14,145 reported in 1999 to 13,588 reported in 2000. Property crime accounted for 96 percent of total crime index offenses reported in 2000. The larceny/theft offenses totaled 10,642, accounting for 75 percent of total index crimes. More than $10 million worth of property was reported stolen in 2000, with approximately 31 percent of that amount reported as recovered by law enforcement officials. State law enforcement agencies reported 29,201 arrests in 2000. A total of 30,258 arrests were reported in 1999. Approximately 29 percent of total arrests in 2000 were arrests of juveniles. Fifty-three percent of arrests for crime index offenses were arrests of juveniles. The number of reported arrests for Driving under the Influence decreased over 16 percent from 5,179 reported in 1999 to 4,304 reported in 2000. Arrests for drug offenses increased 3 percent from a 1999 total of 1,456 to 1,501 in 2000.
