SECURITY PROFESSIONALS SHOULD WORK WITH ARCHITECTS THROUGHOUT THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS TO IMPLEMENT SECURITY MEASURES.
Abstract
A CHECKLIST GUIDES AND ASSISTS SECURITY PROFESSIONALS AND ARCHITECTS IN OBTAINING BETTER SECURITY IN NEW CONSTRUCTION. DESIGNING SECURITY WITH ARCHITECTS SHOULD BE DONE BEFORE CONSTRUCTION, AND THE FIRST STEP IS TO CONSULT WITH OCCUPANTS OF THE COMPLEX AND IDENTIFY AREAS WHICH WILL HOUSE ITEMS OF A SENSITIVE NATURE LIKE SAFES. MAIN CRIME TARGETS SHOULD BE IDENTIFIED. DESIGNING SECURITY INTO A NEW COMPLEX SHOULD BEGIN WITH INTERIOR SECURITY FIRST, EXTERIOR SECOND. SIX POINTS ARE IDENTIFIED AS ESSENTIAL TO SECURITY; ELIMINATION OF ALL BUT ESSENTIAL DOORS AND WINDOWS; SPECIFICATION OF FIRE-RESISTANT MATERIAL THROUGHOUT THE INTERIOR; INSTALLATION OF FIRE, INTRUSION AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL SYSTEMS; SEPARATE SEPARATION OF SHIPPING AND RECEIVING AREAS; PROVISIONS FOR THE HANDICAPPED; ADEQUATE LIGHTING AROUND THE PERIMETER. CHECKLISTS ARE GIVEN FOR SECURITY CONTROL IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS; BUILDING SITE; PERIMETER SECURITY; GUARD COVERAGE TO PROTECT SITE, INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR BUILDING DESIGN, ACCESS FROM THE EXTERIOR, LOCKS, DOORS, INTRUSION ALARM SYSTEMS, STORAGE ROOMS, SAFES AND VAULTS, EXTERIOR LIGHTING.
