This report describes the possibilities for full funding, through voluntary contributions, of the United Nations African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFRI).
Abstract
The report also discusses the situation of other autonomous institutes involved in crime prevention and criminal justice. UNAFRI is expected to conduct activities in five major areas: training and human resource development, research, information and documentation, advisory services to governments, and the promotion of collaborative strategies and activities. UNAFRI currently has a precarious financial situation, because many countries have not paid their assessed contributions. As a result, the United Nations Development Program has pledged support of more than $2 million through 1993. Other United Nations institutes are the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute, United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, United Nations Latin American Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, and Helsinki Institute for Crime Prevention and Control. Regional organizations that cooperate closely with the United Nations are the Arab Security Studies and Training Center and the Australian Institute of Criminology. This network must have the capability of operating as an integrated system if it is to fulfill its potential. Reference notes and attached table
