This paper explores the interaction between insurance and property crime and suggests some ways in which insurers can influence the behaviour of potential victims in such a way as to prevent the crimes from which they may otherwise have suffered.
Abstract
Crime prevention is hampered by a lack of incentives. A 'situational' approach to crime is consistent with the view that environmental measures can help in its prevention. The fitting of crime prevention devices should help to reduce the incidence of certain types of crime and insurers are uniquely positioned to provide incentives for such devices to be installed.
