A COLLECTION OF FOURTEEN ARTICLES ORIGINALLY DELIVERED AT THE SECOND INTER-AMERICAN CONGRESS OF CRIMINOLOGY, DEALING WITH SUCH TOPICS AS THE POLICE, CRIME PREVENTION AND DETERRENCE, AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND THE COURTS.
Abstract
A DISCUSSION OF THE RELATION OF PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL FACTORS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUTHS WHO ARE OF LOWERCLASS ORIGIN AND FIND THEMSELVES ON THE VERGE OF CRIMINAL CAREERS IS FIRST PRESENTED. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE SOME METHODOLOGICAL DIFFICULTIES THAT HAVE HAMPERED STUDIES OF DETERRENCE, THE FUNCTIONS OF PUNISHMENT, DETERRENCE AND THE MARIHUANA SMOKER, AND DETERRENCE AND THE KNOWLEDGE OF SANCTIONS. THE RELATION OF POLICE BACKGROUND CHARACTERISTICS TO PERFORMANCE AND THE EFFECTS OF A POLICE EMERGENCY NUMBERS ARE INVESTIGATED. OTHER TOPICS EXPLORED INCLUDE THE RELATIONSHIP OF POLICE AND MINORITY GROUPS, POLICE DISCRETION WITH RESPECT TO VICTIMLESS CRIMES OF SEXUAL DEVIATION, AND A TYPOLOGY OF POLICE CORRUPTION. FINALLY, THE EFFECT OF THE OFFENSE AND THE OFFENDER'S SOCIAL STATUS ON CRIMINAL COURT DELAY, THE EFFECT OF REHABILITATION EFFORTS AND THE GRANTING OF DUE PROCESS TO JUVENILES ON THE JUVENILE COURT, AND TWO MODELS FOR PLANNING AND EVALUATION OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM ARE ALL STUDIED.
