Well-known and recent crime prevention approaches are described and assessed based on the available evaluations of each program's processes and outcomes.
Abstract
Approaches discussed include primary crime prevention through environmental design, community crime prevention programs, media campaigns and newsletters, and deterrence through punishment of offenders. Approaches to secondary prevention are also discussed including neighborhood improvement programs, neighborhood dispute resolution, diversion programs, and school programs for delinquency prevention. Tertiary prevention includes rehabilitation and specific deterrence through incapacitation. Results indicate that most interventions work in limited settings with limited types of offenders and problems. Therefore, matching the technique to the situation is crucial.
