THE CRIME PREVENTION ACTIVITIES OF THE MULTNOMAH COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE COMMUNITY AFFAIRS/CRIME PREVENTION UNIT ARE DISCUSSED.
Abstract
THE UNIT VIEWS CRIME PREVENTION AS PUBLIC EDUCATION IN THE REDUCTION OF CRIMINAL OPPORTUNITY. THE UNIT'S FULL SERVICE CRIME PREVENTION MODEL STRESSES PUBLIC EDUCATION RELATIVE TO RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY PREVENTION, BUT IT ALSO ENCOMPASSES PUBLIC EDUCATION IN A NUMBER OF OTHER AREAS (E.G., COMMERCIAL BURGLARY, ROBBERY, SHOPLIFTING, RAPE, AND CRIMES AGAINST THE ELDERLY). THE UNIT PROVIDES OR PLANS TO PROVIDE A VARIETY OF SERVICES INCLUDING A CRIME PREVENTION DISPLAY CENTER, CONSULTATION IN HOW TO REDUCE CRIMINAL OPPORTUNITY THROUGH ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, PROGRAMS FOR GRADE SCHOOL CHILDREN, PROPERTY IDENTIFICATION SERVICES, NOTIFICATION TO HOMEOWNERS OF BURGLARIES OCCURING IN THEIR AREA, PROVISION OF CRIME PREVENTION FILMS AND LITERATURE, AND RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL PREMISE SURVEYS. THE HEART OF THE UNIT'S PROGRAM IS A PUBLIC DISPLAY AND A BLOCK MEETING PROGRAM. THE LATTER EMPLOYS OFF-DUTY PATROL DEPUTIES TO CONDUCT RESIDENTIAL BLOCK MEETINGS ON CRIME PREVENTION. THE UNIT, WHICH ALSO HANDLES COMMUNITY AFFAIRS, HAS A FULL-TIME STAFF OF 12. (LKM)
