This report describes 35 programs, available for onsite visitation, that have demonstrated superior achievement in crime prevention in California.
Abstract
Most programs were operated by police or sheriff's departments, although programs sponsored by civic groups and universities also are represented. Programs include a variety of community crime prevention approaches such as Neighborhood Watches, citizen's committees, personal safety and child safety education, and environmental design. Most programs focused on general crime prevention, although some emphasized particular crimes (e.g., transit vandalism, burglary, truancy) or populations (students, the elderly). Program descriptions provide program name and type, sponsoring agency, population served, budgets, problem background, program operation, and impact. The name, address, and telephone number of a contact person for each program also is provided. A listing of crime prevention information resources is appended.
