Assessing the experience of crime prevention projects in Britain, France, the Netherlands, and within the Council of Europe countries, this paper considers the substance of crime prevention initiatives, issues of interagency cooperation, the question of evaluation, and the relationship between crime prevention and broader social developments in order to propose a direction for crime prevention in the 1990s.
Abstract
A balanced program of crime prevention measures embracing situational and developmental measures and emphasizing social integration and social relationships emerges as the course for the future. Additionally, it is necessary to face more honestly potential problems in interagency cooperation in local crime prevention projects and to use adequately rigorous research to evaluate evolving crime prevention policies. Attention also needs to be directed to the relationship between crime prevention and wider social trends and policies. 59 references (Author abstract modified)
