Abstract
An introduction describes the country, its criminal justice system, and the history of its crime prevention efforts, with emphasis on the collaboration between government and business and other unique aspects of the Dutch approach. Another paper focuses on the importance of broad coalitions among public and private agencies, with a strong central agency in charge of development, research, funding, and keeping the attention of elected officials, and describes several forms of cost-effective crime prevention in the Netherlands. The collaboration between business and government is emphasized. Other papers focus give examples of functional surveillance, in which service personnel supervise people and places in relatively impersonal situations; the measurement of commercial crime; the economic and social costs of crimes against businesses; and the preventive activities of Dutch businesses. Further papers present data on fraud and fraud prevention, the results of a victimization survey in Dutch museums, workplace violence, and the use of technology in crime prevention.
