This booklet describes the 25 parts of the award-winning crime prevention programs coordinated by the police department in Hampton, Va.
Abstract
Each component is designed to operate either by itself or in conjunction with other parts of the program. Included are efforts directed at improving the security of businesses, residences, schools, churches, and individual citizens. The Crime Hazard program involves citizen reporting and agency action regarding any crime hazard observed in the city. The False Alarm program involves contacts with businesses showing a pattern of improper use of alarm systems. Workers on Watch asks all businesses with radios or radio-equipped vehicles to report suspicious or emergency circumstances. Other programs include citizen citations, police chief's breakfasts with selected businesspersons, Neighborhood Watch, site plan development review for commercial developments, a youth group called the Hampton Police Explorer Post, an Officer Friendly program, the Multiple Hit program for frequently victimized businesses, seminars, a study of fear reduction strategies, and distribution of 'Crime Prevention Tip' cards.
