Abstract
United Nations member states are increasingly aware that control of international crime demands a multilateral approach that includes international cooperative measures and interdependent efforts. Crime prevention and criminal justice has been a longstanding agenda item of the United Nations General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council. But, within the United Nations system, the most direct responsibility for international efforts toward crime prevention and control rests with the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The article reviews priority themes, the impact of organized crime, control of the proceeds of crime, the role of criminal law in protecting the environment, preventing urban crime, violence against women, managing criminal justice information, technical cooperation, United Nations standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice, strengthening the United Nations prevention and criminal justice program, preparations for the Ninth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, and cooperation between the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Branch and relevant entities.
