This article describes one example of crime prevention through environmental design.
Abstract
The Linda Vista Continuing Education Center, based on their experience with attempting to deter crime around their facility, suggests the following environmental considerations. First, lighting should be installed so that it illuminates areas of concealment. If cost of electricity is a concern, motion sensor lighting is an option. Make sure that fencing and gates are in accordance with zoning codes and regulations. In landscaping, use ground cover that is low maintenance and has features such as thorns that, while not detracting from its appearance, make it unattractive as a hiding place. Develop a cooperative working relationship with the property owner. Make every effort to maintain a neat and attractive appearance of the facility. Make repairs promptly, remove graffiti, keep the grounds trimmed and, in general, demonstrate that tenants of the building care about it. If transients and homeless persons have been using the facility grounds as a campsite, help them to move to shelters or other housing. Notes
