GUIDELINES ON CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (CPTED) ARE PRESENTED THAT FOCUS ON ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT, BEHAVIORAL OBSERVATION, ASSESSING FEAR OF CRIME, VICTIM SURVEYS, AND ANALYTIC TECHNIQUES.
Abstract
A TABLE OF CONTENTS, ACCOMPANIED BY SUPPORTING TABLES AND ILLUSTRATIONS, PRECEDES EACH GUIDELINE: (1) ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT (KEY PERSON INTERVIEWS, MAPPING CRIME-ENVIRONMENT RELATIONSHIPS, ENVIRONMENT DESCRIPTION QUESTIONNARIES, USE OF THE CPTED MODEL FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT, AND USE OF SECURITY SURVEYS); (2) BEHAVIORAL OBSERVATION (EITHER OF OBSERVATION, DEGREE OF STRUCTURE IMPOSED ON OBSERVATIONS, AND PROCEDURAL STEPS IN THE BEHAVIORAL OBSERVATION METHOD); (3) ASSESSING FEAR OF CRIME (ATTITUDE CONSTRUCT INCLUDING AFFECTIVE, COGNITIVE, AND BEHAVIORAL COMPONENTS OF FEAR, DEFINING ENVIRONMENTS BY ATTITUDES TOWARD CRIME, ENVIRONMENT USAGE QUESTIONNARIES, METHODOLOGICAL ISSUES IN ASSESSING FEAR OF CRIME, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA, ASSESSMENT MATERIALS, AND ENVIRONMENTAL CORRELATES OF FEAR OF CRIME; (4) VICTIMIZATION SURVEYS (VALUE OF VICTIMIZATION SURVEYS AND PROCEDURES INVOLVED IN CONDUCTING SUCH SURVEYS); AND (5) QUANTITATIVE ANALYTIC TECHNIQUES (TABULATION OF DATA, USE OF DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES, USE OF INFERENTIAL STATISTICS, SAMPLING METHODS, AND MEASUREMENT OF RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY).
