AN OVERVIEW IS PRESENTED OF CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (CPTED) CONCEPTS AND CONCERNS THAT APPLY IN PLANNING AND IMPROVING PUBLIC OUTDOOR SPACES, SUCH AS STREETS, PARKS, AND OTHER OPEN AREAS.
Abstract
AIMED PRIMARILY AT URBAN PLANNERS, DESIGNERS, AND PUBLIC OFFICIALS WHO INFLUENCE ENVIRONMENTAL DECISIONS AND WHO NEED A BASIS FOR EVALUATING THE POTENTIAL CRIME AND VANDALISM IMPLICATIONS OF VARIOUS OPTIONS, THIS REPORT EXAMINES THE CPTED PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH, INCLUDING DESIGN AND USE PRIORITIES, ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENTS OF STRATEGIC OPTIONS, AND CPTED PLAN DEVELOPMENT. THE PHYSICAL ELEMENTS OF CPTED ARE OUTLINED, WITH ATTENTION TO OUTDOOR LIGHTING, LANDSCAPING, THE DESIGN AND FURNISHING OF BUILT ELEMENTS, AND PHYSICAL PLANNING CONCEPTS AND EXAMPLES. VANDALISM PREVENTION CONSIDERATIONS ARE DISCUSSED ALSO, WITH EMPHASIS ON UNINTENTIONAL AND MALICIOUS VANDALISM, SPECIAL DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS, AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS. FINALLY, THE APPLICATION OF CPTED CONCEPTS IS ILLUSTRATED ON A NEIGHBORHOOD SCALE; AND A HYPOTHETICAL LOCALE IS PRESENTED ALONG WITH NEIGHBORHOOD-WIDE CPTED CONSIDERATIONS AND SPECIFIC PLANS FOR A PARK, SCHOOL GROUNDS, AND PARKING LOTS. CHARTS AND DIAGRAMS ARE PROVIDED, AS IS A BIBLIOGRAPHY. SEE ALSO NCJ 45747-46188. (KBL)
