This booklet summarizes research findings that relate juvenile delinquency to adverse social development experiences, describes existing Canadian programs designed to enhance juveniles' social development, and proposes ways to improve such programs.
Abstract
The research findings associate delinquency with negative experiences in the family, community, school, employment, drug use, health conditions, and exposure to mass media. Existing Canadian programs attempt to reduce youths' debilitating experiences in these areas. Suggestions for action in each of these areas encompass the establishment of new programs and the expansion of existing programs. Since Canada has no national crime prevention strategy, examples of such national strategies are highlighted for France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Also briefly discussed is the future of voluntary sector support for crime prevention. 9 resources.
