This article examines the development and use of a secure website by the Ohio State University Police Department to assist a crime scene team in training and communication.
Abstract
In the Ohio State University Police Department’s attempt to conduct a specialized training for patrol officers for crime scene work, several challenges surfaced including: continuing education for evidence technicians, the sharing of information, and budget limitations. The department addresses these various issues and challenges through the development of a team website located within the department’s intranet, a secure web location. The secure website has several features including: (1) a message board; (2) e-mail links; (3) a reference site; (4) a legal reference site; (5) a “Forms” link; (6) links to articles and training information; (7) a case review page; (8) a current project page; (9) links to crime scene product suppliers; (10) links to online crime scene websites; (11) crime scene related training files for other team members; (12) pages for adding information for evidence processing; and (13) an award site. The team website seems to be cost effective and a simple option.
