Abstract
Highlights from this report on 2011 crime statistics for Tennessee include the following: of the 576,844 Group A offenses reported during the year, 58.7 percent were crimes against property, 28.1 percent were crimes against persons, and 13.1 percent were crimes against society; 36.1 percent of Group 1 offenses were cleared by arrest or exceptional means; the total arrest rate was 6,318.8 per 100,000, with juvenile arrests accounting for 8.9 percent of total arrests; 52.1 percent of all crimes against persons were domestic violence offenses; during the year, a total of 26,340 persons were arrested for DUI (driving under the influence) including 143 juveniles; and decreases were seen in crimes against persons, crimes against property, and clandestine methamphetamine labs, while increases were seen in crimes against society and reported murders. Data for this report were obtained from all law enforcement agencies in the State as well as colleges and universities that report their crime statistics on a monthly basis to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation as part of the Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System (TIBRS) program. TIBRS collects data on 22 crime categories comprised of 47 specific offenses known as Group A offenses, and 11 Group B offense categories. Tables and figures
